Primary Division

Students of all ages begin in Level 1A, learning the basic ballet positions, the progression of a standard ballet barre, and learning the French vocabulary that defines all ballet steps. The student moves into beginning center work, away from the support of the ballet barre.

When the student learns the ballet technique appropriate for each level and when the student's body has become strong enough to accomplish the movements taught, then at the discretion of the Artistic Director, the student moves to the next level where more intricate steps and combinations are introduced. Advancement is based on ability, not age.

Performance experience is an integral part of a dancer's training at CPYB. Performance opportunities will be offered to students in Primary and Pre-Professional divisions who qualify based on requirements as described in the Academic Handbook and Student Policies, and at the discretion of the Artistic Director.

Beyond training in the studio and on stage, CPYB offers CPYB Dialogues, an informative seminar series on important topics such as nutrition and wellness, injury prevention, resume preparation, and more.

All students registered in CPYB's Primary Division will take a placement class at the beginning of the academic year to determine the class level in which they will benefit the most. Placement is based on ability, not age. Notification of placement date and time will be sent upon registration.

Primary classes begin in Carlisle on Friday, September 6, 2019
