Primary Division

Ballet Classes for kids ages 6 and Older – Registration and applications are now being accepted!

Growth Measured in Leaps and Bounds

In the Primary Division, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet provides boys and girls the opportunity to start or continue learning the foundational elements of ballet. All new students ages 6-9 will take a placement class following registration to determine their level. Students ages 10+ will need to first audition.

Whether your student is just starting out or continuing their ballet education, we offer ballet classes specifically designed for children ages 6 and older in our Primary Division. As students are ready, our ballet classes for kids progress from basic ballet positions, vocabulary, and barre work into more advanced movements.

Our Artistic Leadership and faculty guide the advancement of students into the next levels based on ability rather than age.

Ballet Class Progression

Students begin in Level 1, learning the basic ballet positions, the progression of a standard ballet barre, and learning the French vocabulary that defines all ballet steps. The student moves into beginning center work, away from the support of the ballet barre.

As the student learns the ballet technique appropriate for each level, and when the student’s body has become strong enough to accomplish the movements taught, then at the discretion of the Artistic Director, the student moves to the next level where more intricate steps and combinations are introduced. Ballet advancement is based on ability, not age.

Knowing the Best Age to Start Ballet

We’ve been serving parents and children since 1955. While there is no “perfect age” to begin the study of ballet, it can be beneficial to start early. Children’s classes help students develop basic ballet skills, introduce ballet vocabulary, and creative movement.

Our Children’s Division offers classes for students ages 3 and up. Our Primary Division is focused on students 6 years and older. Our classes are relevant for any gender and designed to make sure that students receive the comprehensive development they need.
