Spotlight on Rose Taylor: A Passion for Ballet and Teaching at CPYB

At Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet (CPYB), the nurturing of young dancers is not just about technique, but about fostering an environment where every student feels valued, encouraged, and challenged. One faculty member who embodies this philosophy is Rose Taylor, whose unique blend of passion for both dance and teaching has made her an invaluable part of the CPYB family.

From Kansas City to CPYB

Rose Taylor’s journey into the world of ballet began far from the bustling ballet hubs of New York or Paris. Born and raised in Kansas City, Rose didn’t come from an artistic family, but rather an athletic one. However, from the time she first was walking – she was dancing.  “I don’t remember a time where I didn’t want to dance,” she shares. Though her family wasn’t immersed in the arts, they supported her passion, finding a family-oriented ballet school that would provide her with high quality training.

Her ballet training expanded when she attended the prestigious School of American Ballet during the summer. It was there that she first encountered the students of CPYB. “I was 12 years old, and I remember meeting CPYB students who were already so advanced for their age. It was an introduction to what would later become a deep and meaningful connection with CPYB,” she recalls. Little did Rose know that one day, she would join the faculty at CPYB, where she’d nurture the same love of dance she’d discovered as a child.

A Passion for Teaching

Rose’s career as a dancer took her to both the Kansas City Ballet and Houston Ballet, where she performed while teaching ballet, but it was teaching that truly captured her heart. “I felt more of a connection to teaching than performing,” she reflects. Early on in her career, Rose realized that her future lay in helping others discover their own love for dance. She pursued a graduate degree from the University of Oklahoma to deepen her understanding of how to teach children and adapt to different learning styles, ensuring she could be as effective an educator as possible.

Her commitment to teaching, especially with younger students, has remained a cornerstone of her career. “I’ve always felt a natural connection with younger kids. There’s so much that goes into teaching them the “how” behind the movements, and I really love helping them develop a strong foundation in classical ballet,” says Rose.

The Importance of a Strong Foundation

At CPYB, Rose works with dancers ages 3 to 12 in the Children’s and Primary Divisions, with a particular focus on foundational training in Levels 1-4. For Rose, these foundational years are crucial. She loves guiding young dancers through their very first steps in ballet, instilling discipline, technique, and love for the art form. “It’s so exciting to see how much they grow throughout the year. From September to May, the transformation is incredible,” Rose says.

She’s particularly excited by moments such as when young boys begin learning partnering or when girls get their first pointe shoes. “I love guiding them through experiences like the Nutcracker, seeing them grow into their roles year after year. It’s amazing to witness their development and to help them grow both as dancers and individuals.”

A Future Rooted in Legacy

Rose sees CPYB as a place where young dancers aren’t just trained in ballet but are nurtured in an environment that values their growth as people. She admires the school’s dedication to providing the highest quality of training to every student, no matter their age or skill level. “What makes CPYB unique is how we value every student, whether they’re beginners or advanced dancers. The focus on nurturing younger students and setting high expectations from the beginning shapes their growth in a way that helps them feel valued and capable,” she explains.

For Rose, the future of CPYB is bright. “So much of what CPYB is and who we are is rooted in the vision that Marcia, our founder, had. This belief that children can be immersed in the arts and grow in every aspect of their lives through ballet. It’s a responsibility to carry that legacy forward while also evolving,” she says. “I’m excited to see how everyone here—students and faculty—continues to carry on that tradition and approach ballet in new and exciting ways.”

A Teacher Who Truly Cares

Students at CPYB affectionately call Rose “Miss Rose,” and her office is filled with their drawings, which is a testament to the special bond she shares with her students.

Rose Taylor is a teacher who brings an extraordinary blend of expertise, passion, and heart to everything she does. Her love for teaching, combined with her deep appreciation for the art of ballet, makes her an integral part of the CPYB community. And as she continues to guide the next generation of dancers, there’s no doubt that she will leave an indelible mark on their lives and their love for ballet.
